Against Axl’s wishes, Frankie insists on having the entire Heck family along for the ride as they drive to his college to move him into his dorm. But the short drive turns into an eternity when Sue freaks out after discovering that Frankie forgot to fax in her essay to be a candidate for Junior Peer Leadership Advisor, and Brick proves once again that he can’t be trusted when he keeps losing his new cell phone.

Axl heads to college (just 45 minutes from home) and winds up with a “nightmare” roommate who shows him “what it’s like to live with someone messier and grosser than he is,” says creator DeAnn Heline. (Though their dorm room won’t be too heinous at the start of Season 5, “the mess will grow over time,” she promises.) Brick, meanwhile, enters middle school panicked about “the legend of the bathroom and his fear of swirlies.” Even more unsettling? He’ll also become interested in a girl for the first time. “Because he’s so socially awkward, the whole family has to get involved” in the quest to help him maintain contact with the gal in question, Heline teases.
“Brick makes his own Jell-O,” says Heline. “It does not go well.” The youngest Heck child also gets caught up in something of a Ponzi scheme involving school-fundraising swag. Meanwhile, the family gets a dog — which, Heline notes, “eventually ties in to Frankie’s feelings of being underappreciated by the family.”
