Frankie makes a giant blunder when she discovers that school started a week earlier than she thought, and Sue and Brick must scramble to catch up on the days they’ve missed and re-acclimate themselves to school life. Meanwhile, it looks like the “Year of Sue” might be starting off on a high when she finally gets her braces removed. Axl beats Mike at basketball for the first time in his life, and Brick gets creative in an attempt to find the perfect school book bag.
With Sue entering her senior year, the Hecks take on “additional jobs” — including an at-home gig for Frankie, booking airline flights — to make up for their lack of tuition planning, says executive producer Eileen Heisler. The middle child (finally) getting her braces removed will lead to a surge in confidence and an unexpected tryout for a coveted school squad (plus a number of college tours/bonding opportunities with Mike). Axl and Brick, meanwhile, will both explore new love interests, with Heisler sharing that the youngest Heck comes to the surprising conclusion, “I’d like to be popular.” Lastly, Axl and Hutch will get that off-campus apartment they’ve been discussing — and promptly learn the correct meaning of the phrase “plus utilities.” Suffice to say, this could lead to Axl stealing stuff from his parents to make his situation work.
“Something very important in the kitchen falls through,” teases Heisler when asked about what home-ownership woes will face the Hecks in Season 6. “It’s a part of the kitchen you use very frequently — and it means Thanksgiving has to be celebrated in a more unusual way.”

Of course, this is still The Middle, so everything won’t go exactly as planned — but that’s not going to stop Sue from having the best year ever. (And let’s face it, she totally deserves it!)
